  • Open to all 12th grade students that have pursued any area of the Science Research Program (except Behavioral research)
    • ​Individual or Team research projects are allowed.
    • Paper based competition
    • Paper and entrance forms must be postmarked by September 15!
    • A team of 2 or 3 students may enter even if no one is a senior - speak to Ms. Rinaldo for more information

  • Open to all 12th grade students that have pursued any area of the Science Research Prog.
    • Individual research projects only.
    • Paper based competition
    • Paper and entrance forms must be postmarked by Mid November, (check site for exact dates)
    • 300 Semi-finalists are selected annually, (Mid January), and win $1,000
    • 40 Finalists are selected from the Semi-finalist group and present their research at the National level in Washington D.C. in Early March.

    • Students must send in entry forms and abstract in the late fall and are selected to either be a PowerPoint speaker/presenter (top tier) or a Poster-board presenter (secondary tier)
  • The top "speakers" from the Eastern (JSHS), Sub-Regional fair progress on to the State Level competition at SUNY Albany in Mid March. The top  presenters statewide progress onto the National level.
  • Paper and entrance forms must be postmarked by Early December, (check site for exact dates)
    • Eastern JSHS competition is held at Burnt Hills Ballston Lake High School in Burnt Hills, NY in Mid-Late January/Early February.

Intel International

  • At WESEF and DSEF, the Top individuals will progress on to present their research at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Early May. Each year a different host city is selected. 
  • The Intel ISEF, the world’s largest international pre-college science competition, annually provides a forum for more than 1,500 high school students from over 50 countries to showcase their independent research. 
  • The Intel ISEF is the premiere science competition in the world exclusively for students in grades 9–12.
  • Each year, millions of students worldwide compete in local and school-sponsored science fairs; the winners of these events go on to participate in Intel ISEF-affiliated regional and state fairs from which the best win the opportunity to attend the Intel ISEF. The Intel ISEF unites these top young scientific minds, showcasing their talent on an international stage, enabling them to submit their work to judging by doctoral level scientists and providing the opportunity to compete for nearly $4 million in prizes and scholarships.

    • Students can win a spot to the ISWEEEP competition through their local ISEF affiliated fair sending in their research paper directly (deadline - Late February).
    • All students accepted into the fair will present their research via Poster-board
    • Fair is held in Houston Texas, during the first week of May

Genius Olympiad

  • Open to all students with a project in the areas of Environment, Ecology, Biodiversity, Energy, Environmental Engineering or related “go Green” topics 
  • Individual and Team (up to 3 students) research projects allowed.
  • Poster-board based competition
  • Students can win a spot to the Genius Olympiad competition through their local ISEF affiliated fair or by sending in their research paper directly (deadline for paper submission entries– Early March)
  • Fair is held in Oswego, NY during Regents week. Regents exams may be taken at Oswego High School as long as your school principal and guidance counselor contact the administration at Oswego High School to register you for your exam beforehand.
  • Students and teachers are provided with free housing in the dorms (double occupancy) and free food in the dining hall. 
  • A trip to Niagra Falls and the “Destiny USA” mall in Syracuse are also included free of charge.
  • Prizes are given for placing in your category. Past prizes included a digital tablet.

Google Science Fair​

  • Open to all students that have pursued any area of the Science Research Program
    • Individuals or Teams
    • Format: Film or PowerPoint style presentation (uploaded online)
    • An excellent film or presentation will provide a clear, brief overview of the question you are investigating, the stages of your project, what you set out to achieve and how far you succeeded.
  • Judging: 
    • Top Tip - During the first round of judging, the judges will be focusing on your film or presentation, the information that you give about yourself, your question, your hypothesis, and your conclusion, so make sure that these do your project justice.
  • ​Making the world better - This year, Google’s Science Fair partner, Scientific American, will be selecting one project to receive the Science in Action award. Scientific American will be looking for an entrant whose work addresses a social, environmental or health issue to make a practical difference to the lives of a group or community. All entrants will be considered automatically for this award as part of the main judging process.

Somers Sophomore Science Fair

  • T​his is the only science research competition of its kind in NY that provides the opportunity for first-year science research students to present their intended research design in a formal setting (along with sister fair, the Westlake Science Fair).
  • The competition will begin at 1:00 pm and end at approximately 6:00 pm on the first Saturday in June.
  • Presentations will be judged from 2:00 pm to approximately 4:45 pm.
  • Each student (or team) will be judged at least 4 times, and trophies will be given to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each category.
  • Larger categories will be broken down into smaller subcategories to maximize the number of awards. Unusually small categories will be combined into an average size category to be fair to all.
  • Registration due Late April
